December is poised to be a big month for the mixed martial arts community with this weekend’s action having a particular connection with the New England MMA scene.
CES MMA: Battle Tested will be coming to the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI for the promotion’s last show of 2012 making for a great local alternative for fans who can’t make it out to the other big time events. However, a number of local stars will be testing themselves on a larger stage as Bellator, XFC and, of course, the UFC all have events scheduled for the end of the week.
Here are three bouts New England fans definitely can’t miss this weekend.
3. CES MMA: Battle Tested – Lucas Cruz vs. Andres Jeudi
Unfortunately, NEB won’t be able to make it to Rhode Island on Friday for CES MMA’s year end show, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t exciting for the great bouts they have lined up.
One fight that every fan should keep an eye is a 150 lb. battled between Lucas Cruz and Andres Jeudi. Both men sport perfect 5-0 records and boast some serious striking skills that should make for a fantastic stand-up war.
As Mike Strazzere of WesternMassMMA.com put it, “This fight may be the best match up of the entire year.”
Can’t wait to see the footage of what’s sure to be an epic fight.
2. UFC on FOX 5 – Ramsey Nijem vs. Joe Proctor
In a battle between The Ultimate Fighter alums, the FX-televised preliminary card match-up between Ramsey Nijem and Joe Proctor is a bout New England fans should definitely be interested in.
Proctor, who fights out of Lauzon MMA, is a veteran of the local MMA scene and recently won his UFC debut back in June, defeating Jeremy Larsen via TKO in the first round. Proctor is currently riding a four-fight win streak and will be taking a step up in competition when he takes on former TUF finalist Nijem.
“Stripper Ramsey” has strung together back-to-back wins since returning to lightweight with his most recent victory over C.J. Keith also coming via first round TKO back in June.
While the lightweight title fight between champ Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz may be the bout most fans will be focusing on, don’t forget to show New England’s own Joe Proctor some love.
1. XFC 21 – Nick Newell vs. Eric Reynolds
The one bout this weekend with the most impact on the New England MMA community will be the XFC lightweight title fight between Nick Newell and Eric Reynolds.
As local fans already know, Newell has amassed an impressive 8-0 record (seven wins via KO or sub) despite only having one arm. Hailing from the Springfield based Fighting Arts Academy as well as Connecticut’s Ultimate MMA, “Notorious” will look to make a huge splash on the national scene as he vyes for the XFC title.
Newell always puts on a show when he enters the cage and I expect an exciting five round war when he takes on Reynolds this Friday.
