UFC comes to China; Le KO’s Franklin in Stunning Fashion
Mixed martial arts fans were treated to a ton of action this weekend as both the local and national scenes were teeming with big fights and even bigger finishes.
The UFC held its first ever event in China on Saturday, bringing its famed Octagon to Macau for a FUEL TV broadcast which featured a middleweight clash between former UFC champ Rich Franklin and former Strikeforce champ Cung Le. Right off the heels of his recent movie release, Le proved that he is the man with the iron fist, brutally knocking out “Ace” with a counter lead hook in the first round.
The finish, which earned Le Knockout of the Night honors, can be seen in the video embedded above. I do know how much gas Le has left in the tank, but it’s clear that he can still stand and bang with some of the sports top fighters.
In the night’s other action, light-heavyweight Thiago Silva earned himself his first victory since 2009, coming back in impressive fashion against Stanislav Nedkov to secure a third round arm-triangle choke. Silva was being dominated by the Bulgarian in the first two frames, but Nedkov started to gas in the final round, opening himself up to a Silva resurgence.
The UFC’s contigent of Asian stars also came out victorious on Saturday as welterweight Dong Hyun Kim soundly beat Paulo Thiago to take a lopsided unanimous decision while former Pride champ Takanori Gomi took a hard fought split decision over Mac Danzig.

Bellator 80 Results: Warren Triumphant in Return; Martinez, Volkov Advance to Tournament Finals
Friday night marked the triumphant return of former Bellator champ Joe Warren, who earned his way back to the winner’s circle after taking a unanimous decision over Owen Evinger in the night’s main event at Bellator 80.
The former featherweight title holder took a much safer approac than his last two outings, putting together a technically superior gameplan reliant on Warren’s world-class wrestling in order to end his two-fight losing streak. Warren domianted for all three rounds, utilizing his powerful takedowns to cinch to victory.
Fellow featherweight Rad Martinez also put his wrestling skills on display Friday night, nullifying Wagnney Fabiano’s jiu-jitsu game by forcing him to stand and trade. Martinez unloaded in the final frame, putting a beating on the Brazilian as time expired which sealed the deal on his unanimous decision win.
Martinez advances to the 145 lb. tournament finals and will now face Shahbulat Shamhalaev.
In other tournament action, heavyweight Alexander Volkov benefited from a questionable second round referee stand-up to defeat Vinicius Queiroz.
Volkov was in control with his stand-up for most of the fight, but a takedown by Queiroz in the second frame nearly changed the tides. But before the Brazilian submission ace could do anything on the ground, the ref immediately stood them up.
Clearly an awful call, Volkov made sure he took advantage of it and started firing away strikes at Queiroz, ending the fight with just one second remaining in the second round. Volkov will now face Richard Hale in what’s sure to be an action-packed tournament finale.

Warrior Nation V, Cage Titans “Glory” Results
New England MMA fans were treated to a ton of local action as two of the regions premier promotions held shows in the Bay State this weekend.
On Friday, Warrior Nation V came to the Hu Ke Lau Showroom in Chicopee, putting on a fantastic show that I’m sorely sad that I was unable to attend.
In the evening’s main event, Harley Beekman of Bombsquad MMA and Erik Sommer of CT MMA put on a great, back-and-forth battle for the fans. After dominating the first two rounds, Sommer saw the tides turn as Beekman caused the Connecticut-based fighter’s mouth to bleed after some heavy shots. The ref was forced to call this fight in the third round, awarding “Darkheart” with the TKO win.

Your’s truly was on hand at Cage Titans “Glory” up in Dorchester Saturday night as Mike Polvere and crew put on another great show at the Local 103 Union Hall.
The night featured a fantastic bantamweight scrap between undefeated Connor’s MMA product Billy Giovanella and veteran Dan Bonnell of Team Renzo Gracie. Giovanella made quick work of his more experienced foe, putting Bonnell away with ground and pound strikes early into round one.
